What to wear for a family photography session in winter on the Northern Beaches.!

As a photographer, one of the most common questions I receive from families is “What shall we wear for a session?” and I often get asked about this even more for sessions in the cooler months.

We are of course super lucky in Australia that winter weather can often be beautifully warm, but if your session falls in a colder week, there are lots of ways to dress that will help everyone stay warm, look beautiful and enjoy the session together.

The most important thing is that you all feel comfortable and relaxed. In general, you will get the most from your photography session if you choose a complementary style / colour palette for your family to wear. I don’t recommend all matching outfits exactly, its much better to use complementary outfit choices.

Dressing appropriately for the weather is important and I also suggest bringing a big blanket in winter so you can get some cosy photos of everyone wrapped up warm together.

Here are some tips on the best outfits for family photo sessions in winter:

  1. Layer up: Layering is key when it comes to winter photo sessions. Not only will it keep everyone warm, but it also adds depth and interest to the photos. Start with a warm base layer, such as a thermal shirt or sweater, and add on some layers. Chunky knits are always a great option for winter sessions and especially for kids.
  2. Stick with neutral colours: Neutral, earthy or natural colours are always a good option family photo sessions, especially in the winter. If you think of the colour palette of winter and autumn, this is a good place to start. They create a timeless and classic look that won’t distract from the family’s gorgeous smiles and the amazing connection you all have together.
  3. Avoid large logos or graphics: Large logos or graphics can be distracting in photos and take away from the overall look. Stick with simple patterns or solid colors.
  4. Coordinate, don’t match: Opt for coordinating outfits that complement each other. You can do this by choosing a colour palette and having everyone wear shades of those colours.
  5. Don’t forget the accessories: Accessories such as hats & scarves, not only add extra warmth but also add texture and interest to the photos. You can also consider bringing a few different options to switch up the looks throughout the session.

Dressing for a winter family photo session doesn’t have to be complicated. By layering up, sticking with neutral colours, and coordinating outfits, you can create some beautiful winter photos and everyone can stay warm 🙂

Outfits are such personal choices, there is not a right or wrong answer here, its really what makes you all feel good, comfortable and relaxed.

Have fun with it! Use pinterest for some inspiration too, I have created an inspiration board here that you are welcome to view here, where I save outfit ideas and colour palettes that I like.
